Homeowners describe it the same way every time: a gunshot, a car backfiring, something falling off a shelf. People check the street. Then, hours or days later, they hit the remote and the opener runs, the trolley slides down the rail, and the door doesn’t move an inch.

That sound is stored energy releasing. A torsion spring on a double door holds enough wound torque to counterbalance 150 to 200 pounds. When the steel finally fatigues and the coil separates, all of that unwinds in a fraction of a second inside a metal tube — hence the noise. Go look at the shaft above the door. If you see a clean two-inch gap in what should be a continuous coil, that’s your answer, and no amount of remote-pressing is going to change it.

Stop using the opener now. The motor is designed to guide a door the springs have already made nearly weightless — it is not a hoist. Force it against dead weight and you will strip the nylon drive gear, bend the top section where the opener arm mounts, or pull the door out of the track. Torsion vs. extension: which system do you have?

Torsion springs mount on a steel shaft directly above the door opening, usually one or two of them, wound tight and anchored to a center bearing plate. Cables run from drums at each end of that shaft down to the bottom brackets. This is the modern standard, it’s better balanced, and it lasts longer. Nearly every door built in the last 30 years uses it.

Extension springs run horizontally along each side, parallel to the upper tracks, and stretch as the door closes. They’re cheaper, they were standard on lighter single doors for decades, and you still find them everywhere in the older housing stock — the detached, unheated one-car garages behind homes in South City, Lemay, Overland, Bevo Mill and Ferguson.

Here’s the part that matters. An extension spring system is supposed to have a safety containment cable threaded through the middle of each spring and anchored at both ends. Its only job is to catch the spring if it breaks, so the broken half doesn’t become a projectile across the garage. On older doors around St. Louis those cables are missing constantly — never installed, or removed during some past repair and never put back. If you have extension springs and you can’t see a cable running through the center of each one, that’s not a maintenance suggestion. Have it addressed. Cycle ratings: the number nobody tells you about

Springs aren’t rated in years. They’re rated in cycles — one cycle is one full open and one full close.

  • 10,000-cycle (builder grade). What comes on most new construction. At four cycles a day — leave for work, come home, run an errand, come back — that is roughly seven years.
  • 25,000-cycle (high cycle). Heavier-gauge wire, larger inside diameter, more coils. Roughly double the service life at the same usage, for an upgrade cost of about $70–$130 on the job.
  • 50,000-cycle and up. Worth discussing if your garage is the primary entrance to the house and the door runs eight or ten times a day, or on a commercial opening.

Why DIY spring work is genuinely dangerous

We say “don’t do this yourself” about almost nothing else on this website. Rollers, lubrication, sensor alignment, tightening hardware — reasonable homeowner jobs. Torsion springs are different, and it isn’t liability boilerplate.

A wound torsion spring stores several hundred foot-pounds of energy. It is released and re-applied with two steel winding bars inserted into the cone, a quarter turn at a time, while you hold the entire load on your arms above your head. If a bar slips out of the cone — because it’s the wrong diameter, because a set screw wasn’t backed off correctly, because the cone is worn — the spring unwinds instantly and the bar becomes a two-foot steel projectile at head height. Emergency rooms see the results: broken hands and wrists, facial fractures, lost fingers, worse. Screwdrivers and rebar are not winding bars, and the hardware store sells neither the right bars nor the right spring for your door’s weight, drum size and drop.

How do I know for sure a spring is broken?

Look at the shaft above the door opening. A broken torsion spring shows a clean gap of about two inches in the coil — it looks like someone cut a piece out. On an extension spring system, look along the upper tracks for a spring that’s hanging loose or lying on the floor. The other tell is that the opener runs and the trolley travels but the door stays put.

Can I open the door manually with a broken spring?

We strongly advise against it. A double door with a failed spring is 150 to 200 pounds of unbalanced dead weight, and it lifts crooked, which can pull it out of the track or drop it. If a car is trapped and you absolutely must, it takes two strong adults, a firm grip on the bottom section, and something solid — a step ladder, a 2x4 wedged in the track — holding the door up before anyone walks underneath.
